Optimize HD video playback for Nvidia ION in Linux

Thursday, February 11th, 2010

The Nvidia ION powered Intel Atom processor netbooks and nettops are the rage these days.

Affordable, lightweight and powerful graphics processor.

The Nvidia ION is actually an Intel Atom CPU coupled with a Nvidia 9400m graphics chipset.

Most linux distributions install fine on most netbooks and nettops. However, their default video player may not be optimized for the Nvidia ION chipsets. For HD video playback, without tweaking the parameters of the video player application, the end result may be lacklustre and the playback may even be not in sync or skipping frames.

Monday, January 11th, 2010

The computing juice required for creating an epic animated hybrid movie, such as the movie Avatar is exceptional.

In fact, the data centre that was in charge of rendering the visual effects of Avatar, uses up to 4000 blade servers and is positioned at 197 of the top 500 supercomputers in the world we live in today!

The operating system used for such a huge array of blades…

Because, nothing else comes close..

PS : If you are having problems with the display resolution resulting in your monitor/LCD not being to support and showing a blank screen, open terminal mode

Press “Ctrl-Alt-F1″ on your keyboard

Login with your username and password and Stop GDM

sudo stop gdm
sudo /etc/init.d/gdm stop

Copy the default-1.xml over to the Aquaria settings/preference folder as usersettings.xml [ overwriting the original]

cp ~/aquaria/default-1.xml ~/.Aquaria/preferences/usersettings.xml

Edit the xml file

nano ~/.Aquaria/preferences/usersettings.xmlusersettings.xml

Edit the video section so that full screen mode is disabled, set to 16bits mode, turn off framebuffer and turn resolution to 1024×768.

<ScreenMode resx=”1024″ resy=”768″ bits=”16″ fbuffer=”0″ full=”0″ vsync=”1″ darkfbuffer=”1″ darkbuffersize=”256″ />

Start GDM again

sudo start gdm
sudo /etc/init.d/gdm start

This time the game will run in windowed mode. Change the video settings within the game until it works to your desire.
Or you could also manually adjust the parameters within the ~/.Aquaria/preferences/usersettings.xml file

Dubious Google Chrome OS available for public beta testing?

Wednesday, September 23rd, 2009

First seen by SGLNX on JTWorld ( ), it appears that a virtual image of Google’s Chrome OS is available for testing on VMplayer or VirtualBox.

However, on closer inspection, under the disclaimer on the site providing this download, it says

“Chrome OS is not related to Google. Service provided by SUSE Studio”

The dubious download site even stated its current version is 0.4.207. The version number revision is actually the current version for Google Chrome browser.

Some features listed in this non-google Chrome OS are :

To download, follow this link to JTWorld’s blog.

Desktop preview screenshots available on above link at JTWorld.

Though not a real beta image of the actual Google Chrome OS, SGLNX decided to post this article anyway, in anticipation of the real Google Chrome OS.

We wait patiently.
