A recent article in Enterprise Networking Planet talks about some where IT departments can reduce their costs by opting for opensource.
Some notable ones are
1) Using opensource NMS such as OpenNMS or Nagios instead of commercial NMS (HP Openview, IBM Tivoli).
2) Using opensource NAS (OpenFiler) rather than purchasing expensive customized hardware/software NAS/SAN solutions.
Of course beyond those ways listed in the article, there are more ways that SGLNX can suggest to reduce IT departments’ operating costs.
In the workplace, end user terminals can be loaded with open source Openoffice instead of Microsoft Office. For the email client that is lacking in Openoffice, Open source Mozilla Thunderbird can be installed in place of Outlook. Both Openoffice and Thunderbird are multi-platform, this means that it will be applicable for Apple’s OSX and Microsoft Windows XP/Vista.
Expensive firewalls and web content filtering server can be built with Dan’s Guardian, Smoothwall Express or Untangle. Many step-by-step guides and tutorials are available online.
If you know more ways on how to help save operating costs by switching to opensource, do email SGLNX at admin@sglnx.com.
