Google has so far been successful in deploying the Chrome web browser to Windows users. Though not exactly multi-platform capable yet as variants of Chrome browser for Linux and Mac OSX are still in development.

Today on 8th July 2009, Google surprised the world with its announcement of developing a CHROME OPERATING SYSTEM.

As reported in USA Today, Google said on Tuesday (8th July 2009) that it will be releasing its own operating system “Chrome OS” hopefully by the second half of 2010.

According to TechCrunch, the Google OS will be built to run on both X86 and ARM architecture. It’s seems like the ARM architecture is getting much attention lately, as a contender to Intel Atom for building netbooks. Chrome OS will be a lightweight platform that can be used on netbooks, desktops, servers etc.

SGLNX believes Chrome OS will be a serious rival to both Microsoft and Apple.

Google’s upcoming Chrome OS, will be opensource, just like its previous successful projects namely Android OS for mobile devices and Chrome browser.
